Back Bay Ice Caves

The Ice Caves near Back Bay are a beautiful and easy hike. It's hard not to feel like you're having a true northern experience standing beneath chandeliers of cascading ice!

Time: 40 minutes (round trip)
Km: 2 km round trip from Niven Ridge at Moyle road.

How to get there: The ice caves are about a five to seven minute walk along a tall rock face through the old back back cemetery.  One way to get to the Back Bay cemetery is to take the multi-use trail from Niven down to the lake and follow the shoreline Northbound. From downtown Yellowknife take 48th street Northbound. Turn right onto Niven Gate Road to enter the Niven neighbourhood. Turn Left onto Haerner Drive and follow it. Take the second left on Moyle drive (Moyle is a loop) and park near  the townhouses to access the multi use path. Follow the multi use path down to the lake (10 mins). At the lake, look across to Latham Island. You will see a large blue house directly across from you. At the lake, turn left and follow the shoreline for approximately 10 minutes. You will go around a bend and see a white sign stating "Back Bay Cemetery".

From here, follow the path (west) to the cemetery. Walk through the cemetery, keeping the large rock face on your left. The narrow trail winds sightly for about five minutes, and you will come across the Ice Caves on your left.

Enjoy!
